Looking for good movies on BET Plus? We’ve got you covered.
We went through the BET Plus library to explore which of their original movies stacked up best when asked by the viewers. Admittedly, there were not many movies to choose from, and while we love the Black representation offered, the quality just isn’t consistent throughout their catalog. That’s no knock on them. These movies simply aren’t high budget productions, and they lack the high-end talent that demands top dollar.
That being said, there are still some gems that manage to out punch their weight. And after doing the analysis, and watching a bunch of movies, below is our take on the best movies on BET Plus.
Dutch II
IMDb Rating: 8.1
So if you’re wondering, yes, this is the sequel to Dutch, a movie about a drug lord who takes over a African heroine business on the East Coast of the U.S. The original movie, while interesting, wasn’t revered all that much, getting a 4.1 on IMDb with over 500 people casting their vote. However, I thought the movie “franchise”, so to speak, redeemed itself somewhat with the second installment. Some people agreed with me, as the movie has an 8.1, albeit, on far fewer ratings, as I’m sure many of those first-movie watchers were reluctant to return. However, I think pitting Lance Gross up against Rosci Diaz in the sequel, gave the movie the extra edge, and uplift in acting talent, that the first movie was lacking. So if you’re into crime movies, need your Black characters, and don’t mind seeing us in these fictitious drug worlds, then I definitely think Dutch II is worth a shot.
Does that mean you have to watch the original? Probably! But I promise you, it’s not as bad as those 500 reviewers would have you believe!
Call Her King
IMDb rating: 4.0
So I imagine you’re looking at the IMDb rating of 4.0 and can’t believe this movie somehow made a list of good movies on BET Plus. And I don’t blame you!
But would you be willing to change your mind if you knew that the same movie has an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with over 100 people weighing in? Of course, the rebuttal to that would be that 700 people on IMDb thought the movie sucked. But what do they know?
Listen, I watched the movie, and while all around the acting wasn’t exactly out of this world, it’s an action-thriller movie. Expecting to see great acting in Call Her King is like expecting to see an Oscar-worth experience from an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. What the movie lacks in acting, it delivers in…wait for it: action and thrills.
You can’t tell me that a hostile court scene, followed by a court hijacking, a hostage situation, multiple chases, several fights, with and without guns, and a name like “King” don’t make for a compelling action thriller movie bound to keep your attention. Because trust me, it will.
And the acting isn’t that horrible. Lance Gross, Jason Mitchell and even Naturi Naughton, to some extent, are very credible actors. So if you like action movies, give this one a shot. Just don’t compare it to Gone with the Wind and I think you’l find it enjoyable!
Love & Murder: Atlanta Playboy
IMDb Rating: 6.9
I’ll admit two things about this two-part movie. One, it does pain me just a little bit to see a great thespian like Taye Diggs starring in what is essentially a made-for-TV special. And two, this movie is usually not my cup of tea, but I have to admit, it does garner your attention from jump.
Ultimately, the movie covers the frivolous and ambitious tales of Taye Diggs’ character, Lance, who is a tech mogul who simply can’t be held down by one woman. As the title suggests, he has several lovers across the Atlanta metro area, but eventually all of that catches up with him, leading to a very critical moment for Lance. The ensuing investigation is a good game “who dunnit”, that despite some of the less than stellar acting, Taye Diggs and Keesha Sharp excluded, manages to make it a worthwhile crime-drama watch.
American Skin
IMDb Rating: 7.0
I know many folks have a huge problem with Nate Parker, and won’t hesitate to say that I’m among them. That said, I won’t demean the art in order indict the artist. American Skin is extremely well done thriller consisting of some of the best acting you’re going to find in a BET Plus Original movie. Nate Parker, Omari Hardwick, Beau Knapp, Vanessa Bell Calloway and Theo Rossi make a stellar cast and a “Spike Lee Presentation”.
The movie is about a marine veteran doing what it takes to get justice for his son who was killed by a police officer. The events that happen after that are not unlike those that Parker imagined in his “The Birth of a Nation” film several years ago. Of all the movies on BET Plus, this is likely the best you’re going to find from a quality point of view.
The Final Say
IMDb Rating: 7.2
If you’re in need of a Black love movie, then “The Final Say” may be the movie you’ve been looking for. The combination of Timon Kyle Durrett and Deborah Joy Winans, one of my favorite underestimated Black actresses, makes for one of the better acting combinations in the BET Plus original movie catalog. The two play a very devout couple dealing with infertility issues that lead to their eventual separation. Their religion in church ends up playing a huge role in how they enter the world and whether they find their way back to one another.
