“The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” was a classic Black sitcom in the 1990s that aired for six, full, lovely seasons. It was classified as a comedy, but the show dealt with a variety of topics that were serious, romantic, frightening, sad, cultural and racial. It was a staple in American television and one of the most beloved black TV shows to date.

On the funnier side of things, Will Smith’s character, also named Will Smith, was constantly trying to get attention from the women that crossed his path. As a result, some of the pick-up lines from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” have cemented themselves TV comedy lore. Let’s take a look at ten of the funniest pick-up lines the show had to offer.

1. “How could something so smooth be called sharp?”

In the episode, “Father Knows Best,” Will throws out this line when meeting a woman whose last name is Sharpe…get it? It’s a fun play on words, but it might not work very well as an everyday pick-up line. That is unless you’re constantly trying to start conversations with people whose personalities fall in line with the meaning of their last name.

2. “Baby, you all that and a bag of chips.”

Of course, Will Smith didn’t come up with this line himself, but immortalizing this oft-used 90’s phrase on TV certainly brought it to a “wider audience”. That said, even back when it was a popular thing to say, it didn’t make a lot of sense! What on Earth does “all that and a bag of chips” mean? Obviously, everybody appreciates the side of chips they get when they buy a sandwich. But when it’s all said and done, if you really wanted the bag of chips, would you have even bought the sandwich? Think about it!

3. “Baby, whatever it is that you serving you better give me a double.”

In the episode, “The Best Laid Plans,” Will attempts to pair food and humor in hopes it’ll gain him positive attention from an attractive woman. It’s a relatively funny and harmless attempt, but if taken literally, it would be rather unfortunate if whatever the receiver of this quote was serving happened to be rejection letters.

4. “I noticed you noticing me, so I just wanted to put you on notice… that I notice you too.”

Will’s character was a lot of things, and perhaps a wordsmith was one of them. Putting the word notice into a single sentence on four different equations is quite the accomplishment. It’s almost like this man was extremely confident from having been a rapper or something.

5. “Hey girl, you look so good, I’d marry your brother just to get in your family.”

This pick-up line is probably funny for two different reasons if we’re taking into account the time the joke was written. At the time, gay marriage wasn’t legal in the US and the idea of marrying a woman’s brother to get closer to her sounded like an absurd suggestion. Looking at it today, it’s funny because the idea of a person getting into a legally-binding agreement with someone just so they could get closer to the individual’s sister seems both stalkerish and it’s borderline catfishing, no?

6. “I know your feet must be tired, because you been running through my mind all day.”

This is another well-known line that’s still being tried on occasion in today’s dating world. It was a little corny then and it’s just as corny now. But most pickup lines are corny, making them all about the confident with which you deliver them. Smith had no problem selling the audience, and the ladies, on his confidence.

7. “Girl, if God made anything prettier than you, I hope He kept it for himself.”

Not only is this pick-up line kind of sweet, the idea of Will thinking about God’s love life, even jokingly, is pretty funny. It’s probably not a good idea to repeat this line to a complete stranger, but it might get a smile out of someone you’re familiar with.

8. “Actually, baby, you got it, but I take donations.”

This one ends up being funny, not so much because of the pick-up line itself, but because attempting this ends with Will being put in his place for once.

During this episode, Will attempts to flirt with a young woman in an academic setting and she doesn’t go for any of his sophomoric ways. Instead of laughing or waving off his comment about her “getting with” him, she tells him in no uncertain terms that he can talk to her like she’s a human being if he wants her attention. It was the first time we had seen a powerful, female response like that to one of Will’s lines. Thankfully, it wouldn’t be the last!

9. “I think I’ve seen your picture somewhere before. Oh yeah, that’s right, it was in the dictionary next to KABLAM!”

‘Kablam’ can mean a few things, so this being the term Will decides to go with is funny because none of those few things actually applies here. The scene’s context makes it easy to understand what he meant, but reading the line as a standalone quote will make you lose your English-major-loving mind. The ‘kablam’ is simply a sound-based pickup line that’s going more for shock factor than it is smooth. This line is also a decent throwback to the old picture in the dictionary under/next to “insert joke here.”

10. “Somebody call the cops, ’cause it’s got to be illegal to look that good.”

The idea of someone looking so good they’re technically committing a crime was probably funny back in the 90s when we still could laugh about the idea of Black people calling the cops (sigh). If you’re going to repeat this one, though, do it quietly so that nobody overhears you and starts dialing–we no longer need those problems if they can be avoided!

Aside from a variety of funny lines, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” showcased the talents of a plethora of black actresses, often playing opposite of Will Smith as the date, girlfriend or love interest. Many of these talented Black women went on to fill bigger and better roles in movies and TV after appearing on “The Fresh Prince”, making this show, and is thirst for corny pickup lines, not just a funny heuristic fans came to love, but it was also the pretence for a role that helped a number of amazing Black actresses get exposure on one of the biggest Black TV shows airing on the nation’s most popular network of the decade. From Queen Latifah and Tisha Campbell, to Stacey Dash and Nia Long, these already supremely talented woman only saw their careers take off after strong performances on the show.
